About [Edit]
The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies [Durban] seeks to promote democratic practice through various educational and training projects, such as the "Democracy for All" and "Street Law" programmes. The Centre is also responsible for a number of human rights publications, including the "South African Human Rights Yearbook", and "Democracy Watch".
The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies is founded on the following aims and objectives:
that the legal infrastructure of a democratic society be based upon community needs and aspirations;
that repressive laws be replaced by protective and responsive legal rights and legal procedures;
that through education, training, research and the publication of suitable materials, the fundamental importance of human rights and democratic values be promoted;
that meetings, seminars, conferences and workshops be organised in the interests of promoting internationally acceptable standards in labour and human rights law;
that the Centre remain independent of any political movement or party.
