About  [Edit]

Worldfish_logo The WorldFish Center is an international, non-profit, research organization that works to reduce poverty, hunger, and malnutrition in developing countries by making fish more readily available for food and income. The Center provides the sound scientific knowledge needed to increase fish production, guide the management of fisheries and other aquatic ecosystems, reverse habitat degradation, and influence policies involving fish and the people who depend on them.

Established by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1977 as the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM), the Center modified its name after it moved its headquarters from the Philippines to Penang, Malaysia, in 2000. Today the Center has outreach offices and field sites in eight countries.

Mission

The WorldFish Center is part of the Future Harvest Alliance of international research centers supported by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research.

The WorldFish Center's Mission is:
"To reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture".

Our Vision is:

"To be the science partner of choice for delivering aquaculture and fisheries solutions in developing countries".

Taken together our Mission and Vision clarify our fundamental purpose and ambition.

Our Commitment

We aim for:
  • poverty eradication;
  • a healthier, better nourished human family;
  • reduced pressure on fragile natural resources; and
  • people-centered policies for sustainable development.
We achieve this through research, partnership, capacity building and policy support. We promote sustainable development and use of living aquatic resources based on environmentally sound management.

We undertake research to:
  • improve productivity;
  • protect the environment;
  • save biodiversity;
  • improve policies; and
  • strengthen national programs.
