About [Edit]
Animas Conservancy land trust was incorporated in 2000 as a Colorado non-profit land trust organization. Our mission is to work with private landowners to develop conservation strategies in the Animas River watershed and greater La Plata County. Our goal is to conserve 10,000 acres of open space by the year 2010.
With the dramatic increase in growth and development throughout the county, it is critical that we work with together with efficiency, creativity, and innovation to assure that those open spaces that define our region remain intact.
We believe that education and landowner assistance are vital components to sound decision-making. Our staff works closely with landowners to develop perpetual easements that will best protect values-from open space to wildife habitats and wetlands.
The same is true of our work with the general public. An informed citizenry can have a direct effect on land use decisions. To that end, Animas Conservancy has been active in discussions regarding Transferable Development Rights Program in La Plata County. In addition, our Board President, Jenny Newcomer is a member of the Open Space Advisory Board, looking for ways to develop a funding source for public open space for the City of Durango.
