About [Edit]
Aga Khan Foundation Canada [AKFC] is a private, international development agency that promotes social development among poor and vulnerable populations in Africa and South and Central Asia without regard to race, religion or political persuasion. The Foundation seeks practical and inexpensive ways to enhance the quality of education, improve healthcare, increase rural incomes and build capacity in institutions, communities and individuals in order to sustain development efforts. It operates in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Uganda. In Canada, AKFC acts as a catalyst for increasing awareness and understanding of critical global issues.
AKFC is part of the Aga Khan Development Network [AKDN], a group of agencies established in 1967 by His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims. These agencies work to improve living conditions in specific regions of the world through social, economic and cultural development. All members of the Network share a common objective: to empower people to take charge of their own lives and environment. AKDN`s development programs emphasize community participation, creation and use of local expertise, rigorous management of resources, use of appropriate technology and ultimate self-sufficiency.
