Urban ecology is a new branch of environmental studies that seeks to understand the natural systems of urban areas and the threats that face them. The study of urban ecology encompasses the study of trees, water, wildlife and natural spaces found in cities to understand the environmental challenges facing cities today.

UEI engages students, teachers, and community members in the investigation and stewardship of the urban environment through science and environmental education and curriculum development, hands-on field studies and citizen science investigations, and urban restoration ecology projects. Through this, UEI brings together communities and neighborhoods in pursuit of ecologically healthy cities.
