About [Edit]
The Alliance for Climate Action is a group of local, regional and state-level professionals that developed the 10% Challenge. The 10% Challenge is a key part of the Alliance's commitment to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions in Burlington, Vermont.
Climate change, accelerated by human activity-generated "greenhouse gases", is one of the largest public policy issues facing society today. Scientific models predict that global warming could cause significant economic, social, and ecological impacts. While the future of our earth's climate can not be conclusively known, the potential scale and irreversibility of these impacts are prompting leaders at the local, national, and international levels to adopt action plans for climate protection.
In May of 2000, the City Council of Burlington, Vermont adopted a Climate Action Plan (refer to website address below) aimed at reversing the steady growth of greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Burlington. This plan calls for the continuation of joint effort by task force members and key community leaders to implement, nurture and monitor the progress of the plan.
Our Mission
To support implementation of the plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent as adopted by the Burlington City Council in May, 2000, and to monitor its progress. The Alliance commits to work with regional and statewide entities that can help to achieve this aim, and will support the expansion of this effort beyond the City of Burlington throughout the state of Vermont.
