About [Edit]
Youth Movement Records (YMR) is a non-profit, youth-directed recording company and youth development project based in Oakland, California. Now in its third year, YMR has reached over 15,000 youth with more than 100 safe, sober weekend events. YMR has engaged over 500 youth directly in producing 4 original CD’s, planning and creating performances, and giving youth the opportunity to gain and sharpen skills such as:
- Marketing & promotion
- Finance & Accounting
- Event Planning & Management
- Organization & Leadership
- Audio Engineering
- Web & Graphic Design
- Legal skills
YMR participants ages 13-19 are supported in their work by supportive professional mentors who guide and coach the youth successfully through their projects.
Youth Movement Records has fast become a recognized cultural organization. We were recently awarded a prestigious Icon Award from the national organization Music for America along with other notables such as Green Day and Grammy nominated band Death Cab for Cutie. YMR has been invited to support Amnesty International’s “Make Some Noise†concert at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon as part of their national conference, and shared the stage with several national acts (Incubus, Collective Soul, Suzanne Vega). Locally, YMR is active performing in a number of events and festivals such as San Francisco’s Carnaval, Black & White Ball, performances at juvenile detention and drug-treatment facilities through Bread & Roses and hosts numerous all-ages weekend events. YMR has reached audiences ranging a very broad spectrum of income, background and taste.
Our greatest accomplishment is the leadership development of the youth artists and crew who come up through our program. Over 90% of our participants graduate from high school and most go on to college or directly into employment. This is remarkable considering the fact that youth in Oakland public schools have a graduation rate of 48%. Many of the youth leaders who graduate and remain in Oakland continue to stay involved with YMR as mentors and staff.
YMR provides a counter-punch to the crass images targeted at youth through the mainstream media by creating opportunities for youth to engage in critical analysis, personal development and the creation and expression of an alternative artistic movement based on principles of justice, equality and social engagement.
