About [Edit]
We are a network of more than 350 Fair Trade Organizations in 70 countries. Our mission is to improve the livelihoods and well being of disadvantaged producers by linking and promoting Fair Trade Organizations, and speaking out for greater justice in world trade.
IFAT has a new name: the World Fair Trade Organization.
Our members – all of them committed to 100% Fair Trade – supported the name change at our Annual General Meeting in October 2008. The new name is part of a process to clearly state our mission and give us a platform to truly impact the livelihoods of the most vulnerable through Fair Trade.
Now that our members have spoken, we are working hard to create the tools to help us tell the world who we are and what we stand for.
Areas of Work
Our work is centered around three areas of work:
- Market Development (Developing the market for Fair Trade)
- Fair Trade Monitoring (Building trust in Fair Trade)
- Advocacy (Speaking out for Fair Trade)
We do this by...
Linking members of the network
Membership of IFAT gives Fair Trade Organizations the opportunity to forge relationships, especially through its international and regional conferences.
The biennial international conferences are the most important
gatherings of IFAT; they are its general assembly. Decisions taken at
these conferences set the direction for its work for the next two
years. The first conference took place in 1991 in Kilkenny, Ireland,
opened by then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson (now UN Commissioner
for Human Rights).
IFAT's regional conferences take place in the alternate (even-numbered) years between the biennial conferences. They serve to facilitate communication between members within each region, develop regional markets, promote Fair Trade, discuss regional issues and concerns, provide opportunities for learning and to bring new members into IFAT.
Keeping the network informed
We communicate regularly with our members, collecting and disseminating relevant information. Twice monthly electronic updates are produced by the Secretariat to keep members informed of IFAT's activities and to channel enquiries and commercial opportunities.
Collaboration with Shared Interest
IFAT works closely with Shared Interest, which provides financial services on fair terms to enable producer groups to pay for labour, materials and equipment until these costs can be recovered from sales to consumers.

October 15 2008 at its Sri Lanka AGM, IFAT members voted, by a majority of 91%, to become the World Fair Trade Organization. A platform for global change and a step towards the sustainable economy.
