About [Edit]
The Sustainable Business Network is a forum for businesses that are interested in sustainable development practice to get together and make it happen.
As members of the Sustainable Business Network we are working towards:
Economic Prosperity – to undertake best business management so as to support long-term economic growth for New Zealand.
Environmental Quality – to go beyond compliance through the adoption of proactive strategies which restore and enhance the environment in which we live, work and play.
Social Equity – to see NZ business operating as a good corporate citizen and encouraging respect and dignity to all stakeholders by developing mutually beneficial partnerships with local community stakeholders.
Corporate Governance & Ethnics – to conduct business in an ethical manner and to seek to do business with companies which adopt the same principles.
Sustainable Business Network Position
Due to the significance of the impact on health and the environment the Sustainable Business Network have introduced a programme focusing on sustainable transport initiatives and encourages organisations to adopt GreenFleet practices. Those include adopting transport management plans which include travel demand management, encouraging the use of public transport, car sharing, riding or walking to work’ offsetting emission through native tree planting programmes etc.
We encourage and urge businesses to look at ways to reduce their carbon production and emissions in line with the national commitment to Kyoto. We do this by providing appropriate resources for our members such as the GreenFleet and Energy management resources. There are numerous business opportunities to be found in the provision of knowledge, service delivery and through increased competitiveness, energy efficiency and the development of new products and services to meet demands for alternative power, energy efficiency etc.
The SBN supports the concept of Zero Waste [see Zero Waste NZ] and sees it as an opportunity for business to: increase competitiveness from efficiencies, develop new and innovative products and services and to work with suppliers to improve their value chains from lower inputs of materials and energy and with reduced emissions.
The bottom line is that waste does not enhance customer or stakeholder value and therefore ultimately has no place in business. Reducing waste enables business to maximise the amount of product per unit of raw material, reduce the cost of production as well as reduce waste disposal costs. There are a growing number of business examples where companies are continually reducing costs through waste reduction see www.sustainable.org.nz for local examples.
