Our purpose is to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment.
Atlantic States Legal Foundation was established in 1982 to provide legal, technical, and organizational assistance on environmental issues to citizen organizations (NGOs), individuals, local governments, and others.
ASLF delivers expertise along six program areas:
* Watershed restoration and pollution control
Wetlands and habitat protection, GIS, citizen monitoring, wastewater treatment, urban river restoration, corridor planning. Current focus: Oswego River basin, Onondaga Creek and Coalition to Restore Urban Waterways (CRUW).
* International Training & Education
Wastewater treatment, geographic mapping (GIS) and modeling, pollution prevention, democratization/public participation, tourism initiatives, watershed planning. Exchange programs and internships. Current focus: NGO's in Baltic and Black seas area, Biebrza and Bialowieza National Parks in Poland.
* Environmental Justice
Preferentially helping people of color and the less fortunate in solving site specific environmental problems. Consultants to the Haudenosaunee Task Force and several Native Nations within the US. Developing similar programs abroad. Current focus: Tuscarora, Cayuga, Seneca and Tonawanda Nations and Onondaga Creek.
* Community Education and Public Empowerment
Education projects include staff development, community workshops on health risk, pollution prevention, environmental education, establishing a community reference library and computer training for local and international citizens. Current focus: Midland Regional Treatment Facility.
* Environmental Policy
Emphasis on pollution prevention and regulatory reform (Project XL and Common Sense Initiative) aimed as ends rather than means. Current focus: F006 metal wastes.
* Environmental Litigation
Enforcement of US statutes including laws pertaining to clean air, clean water, toxic and hazardous materials, environmental impact, wetlands and false claims. Interest in applying these principles to developing legal framework abroad. Using US Courts to bring suits on behalf of foreign nationals hurt by actions of US corporations and the US Government.
