About  [Edit]

Kinaiyahan (local word for nature) Foundation, Inc. (KFI),  was established in September 1988, as a non-government environmental organization focusing on environmental education and advocacy and community development  It was set up by four (4) social development workers in Davao City, Philippines  at the height of the growing concern about the fast degradation of Mindanao’s ecological systems.

VISION

MISSION

An environmental NGO pro-actively involved in facilitating community empowerment through popular education, promotion of indigenous knowledge and systems, appropriate and environment-friendly technologies, policy advocacy and linkage-building towards the building of healthy and sustainable communities.

Its vision is rooted on the concept of a liberating sustainable development founded on the people’s perspective and initiatives.

It aims to facilitate people empowerment indicated by the development of a collective political will to take concrete action in the protection and defense of their basic life-support systems and the attainment of economic power to rise from their present state of deprivation by gaining needed technological skills which are environment-friendly and alternative livelihood sustainable within their respective resource communities.

KFI hopes to build healthy

-         local communities who are able to connect water,  trees and their life—not

  only at present but more of the future generations;

-         local communities who are able to relate small organisms like bacteria and

  earthworm to healthy soil, healthy plants and food security;

-         local communities who are able to connect clean air to trees and healthy

  population

-         local communities that consider that  protection of the environment is not a matter of

        choice  but a responsibility;

-         local communities  that realize that we, adults owe to every child their right to a clean and

        healthy environment.

  To implement these KFI has the following OBJECTIVES/GOALS

  1. Develop and facilitate community initiatives on environment (natural resource management) and sustainable development, and advocate for the enforcement and enactment of favorable environmental policies related to forestry, marine, solid waste, mining, biodiversity and other environmental issues;

  1. Initiate venues and opportunities for the active involvement of the educators and youth –both in-school and out-of-school  - in environmental protection, conservation and rehabilitation;

  1. Capacitate local communities leading to increased environmental awareness and enhanced skills in the development of environment-friendly small-scale livelihood opportunities;

Kinaiyaha Foundation, Inc. or KFI has been working in the past three years among the Indigenous Peoples' (IPs) communities in the uplands of Marilog District, Davao City, Philippines.  The  IP group is known more as Matigsalogs.  Most of the areas had been stripped of its original vegetation through logging activities between the 60's and the 80's.  This has affected the cultural, economic and social aspects of the life of the IPs.  Further it has also put  under threat quality and quantity of water, biodiversity and soil condition in the area.

KFi has facilitated community-based reforestation activities, using indigenous tree species, and has started conducting educational activities among the IP communities to stress on the importance of rehabilitating the uplands and why mono-crop plantations (which are slowly encroaching in Davao City's uplands) are not enviornment-friendly.  KFi has also started introducing sustaianble agriculture among the Ip groups, but to a limited scale yet.  From May 2007 - April 2008, about 66 hectares community-based reforestation area has been finished.   With the communities' help, we hope to ensure that trees planted in these area will grow to become big trees and become source of seeds for future refo projects.

Betty,

    I think your about section does a good job of explaning the purpose and future goals of KFI.  It might be interesting to Wiserearth users to describe some current or past projects.  Are you currently working with any small communities?  Do you have any testimonials or techniques to share?  Sounds like a great organization!
