Hi. right now i am based in Battanbang Cambodia working with a great bunch of very savy individuals who are assisting chldren in need...take care and be aware of all the bad stuff we need to change....my new email is; lenisincambodia at gmail.com

Tsunami Haven is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the victims of the east coast of Sri Lanka whose lives were changed dramatically on December 26, 2004 by a series of huge waves that crashed into their lives, leaving them homeless, afraid of the sea, and grieving losses of parents, siblings, friends, schools, businesses, churches and complete villages.
Projects
Sri Lanka ProjectWe are completing the construction of school #4 in Kalmunai. It is 1000 sq.ft. with a tiny library and office. The land was donated by a Hindu Temple. The children come from various religious backgrounds. We would like to furnish the 70 pre-school children with hats, backpacks and school supplies as per their teachers request. The children attend school until around 1pm.
In the afternoons the buildings we build are used by the local women as a center, which flows into family use in the evenings.
We are also developing a family dental education program to be presented to the children & surrounding community. For this we give a hearty THANK YOU ! to Dr. Amil Shapka of KIA for supplying us with the materials to teach this program they developed.
Kindness in Action ,(KIA) based in St. Paul Alberta, offers dental care and knowledge exchange with India, South America and the Philippines and has had over 200 volunteers over the past 15 years of operation. They establish their projects one year in advance. We expect to receive some dental equipment from their warehouse in January to utilize in Sri Lanka on a temporary basis.
They are considering the development of a portable Sri Lanka dental clinic and group of volunteers, to provide over-lapping treatment and care to the victims living in the displaced persons camps. Their planning meeting is in May every year. The dental equipment will stay in Sri Lanka as long as a continuous overlapping contingent of dentists and dental assistants continue to arrive in the country for at least 3 weeks at a time. Working side by side with local dentists, and treating all who sit in the chair will be the focus of the project termed: Canada Dental Team.
The idea of a pre-school building program and dental project were brought about due to requests from the local communities and the observation of Canadian and other volunteers working in Sri Lanka immediately after the Tsunami of December 26,th 2004.
The small school is a good place to a start community dental educational program. When the children go home from the school in the heat of the day around 1:00pm the space can be used for a women's center and many adult oriented educational projects.
Once constructed the schools are handed over to the group known as "Sarvodya" or to "PPDS" (Peoples Progressive Democratic Society) to operate. Both organizations have been assisting women and children for many years in Sri Lanka. A modest sign stating to the effect: "school built with help from our Canadian friends" would be placed outside the buildings. (Their idea)
The blessings of the Sri Lankan government came with the explanation of the projects of Tsunami Haven. The District Secretary (like our mayor) in Kalmunai has given his approval and support to these projects.

Let us not be stopped by that which divides us but look for that which unites us
If we could reduce the world’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all existing human ratios remaining the same, the demographics would look something like GO TO THIS LINK: http://www.tsunamihaven.org/blog/blog.htm |

Tsunami Haven Projects Society: Hand to Hand, one brick at a time....
We have built 4 pre-schools on the island of Sri Lanka since the recovery effort of the Tsunami of Dec 2004. Working with both Hindu and Buddhist survivors and marginal folks we seek out their advise where we can be of most assistance to them. Education is the long term solution. Our volunteers pay their own way to/from and during their mission. We use donated funds strictly for the projects, not to operate them. Our 25 volunteers so far have come from the medical, educational, dental, artistic, business, social work and banking communities. Canada, USA, Iran, UK, Belgium, France, Hong Kong and Australia are where our volunteers and supporters hail from. We embrace the concepts of World Peace and Equality for all. We respect all religions. The website shows our development and this BLOG updates as events occur. We are a registered non-profit society in the Province of BC. Our board of directors are an investment banker, a doctor, a dentists and a social worker. We do not nor will we have paid staff. 100% of our donations go to aid the children in need in Sri Lanka. By building small one room brick pre-school buildings the whole community benefits. After lunch when the children go home the buildings are used in the afternoons and evenings by women, teenagers and families. We have been asked to continue to build these schools. Our cost per school is around 10 thousand dollars. We have established contacts with a Buddhist priest, a Hindu priest and friends of the President of Sri Lanka who are all urging us to continue our work. We require on-going funding to do so. Please contribute what you can Thank you <> "If you carry Peace in your Heart, Peace will be your world." Thank you so much for sending me a copy of your book on your 70 days in Sri Lanka following the tsunami disaster. Your descriptions of those days are fascinating, especially since I have been in Sri Lanka on a number of occasions over the years and know the East Coast well.
The devastation was horrendous, but the efforts of local people to reconstruct their lives and their homes have been both impressive and heart-warming. Their appreciation for what you and others have done to help make this possible must be of great personal satisfaction to you and I congratulate you for your efforts. However, much remains to be done and your book will be an ongoing reminder that the willingness of developed countries to continue their assistance must not be overlooked. The greatest feed back we received about our efforts was from a school teacher
who wrote that it was not the gifts, or things that we gave to the survivors of the Tsunami...it was the fact that we cared about them. That we came and reached out a helping hand was so important, more important than money or stuff...the gift of love. The Tsunami has passed, but now we are aware of the violence towards women, the poverty, the war against the Tamils and many other injustices on this lovely island paradise. We solicit your urge to volunteer...come and join our team! or if that is not possible, then make a donation to help us continue our work. www.tsunamihaven.org (info@tsunamihaven.org) (PAYPAL of course!) |

To Whom It May Concern
Regarding Mr. George Bryers:
I am most pleased to be able to recommend George on the basis of his
volunteer performance with our little organization this past year.
He came to us completely inexperienced, not knowing what his task
would be, and was able to find his way to Sri Lanka, establish contact
with the communities we work with and in doing so demonstrated his
unique and efficient talents for working with others.
His skills at sizing up a situation and seeing what is required and reporting detailed information are remarkable. He went into action, made decisions, conducted himself as a professional and has proven to be one of our most productive volunteers.
His ability to work within extreme conditions, certainly not at the usual comfort levels we normally enjoy, clearly demonstrate his ability to adapt to any situation and remain productive.
It is my understanding that George is now considering a completely new avenue for career opportunities. To me, this is what world travel experience, and particularly volunteerism is about. Being exposed to other realities brings one face to face with who we really are, and exposes our hidden talents.
George certainly has gained from his experience with THPS and we likewise have grown because of his contribution. I have no hesitation recommending George for any situation he might pursue in this life. Indeed, George is a “winner” and we miss him already
Sincerely
Len Walker
