About  [Edit]

A Rocha is a Christian nature conservation organisation, our name coming from the Portuguese for "the Rock", as the first initiative was a field study centre near the Alvor Estuary in Portugal.

As Christians all over the world have recognised the urgent need to protect and restore important habitats, A Rocha has become a family of projects working in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North and South America and Asia.

A Rocha projects are frequently cross-cultural in character, and share a community emphasis, with a focus on science and research, practical conservation and environmental education.

Conservation

One of the main causes of current biodiversity loss is the destruction of habitats. Whether by dramatic damage or by slow decline, this process not only diminishes the world¹s wealth of plants and animals, but also creates less functional landscapes that are unable to satisfy human needs. A Rocha chooses to ground its scientific expertise and theological

principles in sites. For each of A Rocha¹s study and management sites listed in these web pages, the presence of a resident A Rocha team with its programme of research and conservation is working to reverse habitat decline and biodiversity loss. The sites provide case-studies of wider relevance on the protection and restoration of valuable habitats and species.

Research

A Rocha¹s vision for the good stewardship of God¹s world requires an adequate understanding of organisms, their inter-relationships and environments. A Rocha¹s scientific programmes aim to provide the foundation needed for informed protection and management of examples of the world¹s most precious natural areas.

Building Community

Technology ensures prolific and instant communication with almost any part of the globe, but one of A Rocha's priorities is to develop and maintain relationships of quality and depth that reflect God's relationship with his

creation.

Environmental Education

A Rocha projects worldwide are involved in many different programmes of environmental education, from hosting schools in Portugal to running an environmental art programme for rural women in Lebanon, to providing scholarships for secondary school students in Kenya and much more. A Rocha is working to help people appreciate the beauty and fragility of the

natural world. In some locations A Rocha's environmental education programmes

are the only opportunity local people have to learn about the importance of protecting the environment or to enjoy spending time in a natural setting.
