About [Edit]
The Slovak Wildlife Society (SWS) is a not-for-profit Anglo-Slovak initiative for the conservation of Carpathian wildlife. Our goal is to help ensure the long-term survival of endangered and vulnerable species and their habitats in Slovakia by finding sustainable solutions for co-existence with people. We use a variety of methods, including eco-tourism, scientific research, artistic expression, publication and environmental education. Local involvement, volunteering and exchange of information and ideas between nationalities are integral to our work.
- A programme of sustainable, responsible eco-tourism in the Tatra Mountains;
- "Carnivores for People": A new fund to share the benefits of eco-tourism with local people;
- A public opinion survey of Slovak citizens to determine their attitudes towards and knowledge about the wolf (Canis lupus), bear (Ursus arctos) and lynx (Lynx lynx);
- The BEARS Project: Bear Education, Awareness and Research in Slovakia;
- Annual population surveys of the critically endangered Tatra mountain chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) as well as marmots (Marmota marmota) in the Low Tatras National Park;
- Protection of Livestock and Conservation of Large Carnivores - a project to resolve human-wildlife conflicts by assisting farmers in the use of non-lethal ways to protect their flocks;
- Art in Nature: The use of creative media to promote a greater appreciation of other species;
- Long-term scientific research on the diets of the wolf and brown bear;
- Scientific research on wolf home range and ecology.
To raise funds and provide field assistance we organise and host working holidays and run low-impact "Wolves, Bears & Eagles" wildlife holidays. Our eco-tourism programme generates revenue for other projects and also helps to show local people the value of protecting their wildlife and natural habitats, rather than over-exploiting them. Through our international activities SWS also aims to publicise more widely the young and little-known country of Slovakia, its wildlife and conservation issues.
