About [Edit]
The Centre for Information, Training and Development [C.I.T.D] is a non-profit non-governmental organisation [NGO].
It undertakes activities through which socio-economic issues will be addressed and provides and assists the community with relevant information and practical training to promote development.
Our objectives:
To research, compile, distribute or otherwise make accessible information on various topics of benefit to the community
To facilitate and consolidate the exchange of information between different cultures.
To promote language equality and linguistic human rights and teach auxilliary languages like Esperanto.
To develop the community`s standard of living through the launching of various projects
To assist people by providing practical skills training and other means for self-employment
To teach locally used languages such as English and Zulu, as well as others [for example French] according to the needs of the community.
C.I.T.D. is a member of the South African National NGO Coalition.
Projects
The following projects have been completed or are being planned by C.I.T.D. and its partners.
French language micro-library
A micro-library for the French-speaking community, was opened in Central Durban in 2001. The project is a collaboration between C.I.T.D. and Alliance Français of Durban.
HIV/AIDS Seminar: "Hope of Africa: God`s answer to AIDS"
Refugee statistics
Information and statistics about refugees` living conditions, employment, education levels etc. is vital for the UNHCR and other organisations to better assess the needs of the community and to make better use of limited resources. C.I.T.D., with its links to the refugee community, is in the ideal position to gather and compile such statistics.
Information on public services
Many South Africans, particularly from previously disadvantaged areas, are not aware of information and services [provided by government, private sector or NGOs] that are available free-of-charge. These include fundamental services such as "Pro Deo" council, government grants, etc. C.I.T.D. can address this problem through awareness campaigns at schools [reaching parents through their children], information centres at public libraries or distribution of information leaflets. A project such as this could be undertaken in partnership with government departments and service providers as well as other NGO`s.
Leaflet distribution service
The aim of this project is to generate income for C.I.T.D. while also providing employment to individuals from the community. C.I.T.D. will advertise it`s leaflet distribution service at local businesses and in local newspapers. The client will provide their own leaflets and specify where the leaflets should be distributed. People from the local community will be employed to distribute the leaflets, and will be paid on a commision basis while C.I.T.D. will manage and/or supervise the distribution. A percentage of the income will be retained by C.I.T.D. to finance operating expenses and other projects.
Water-training
Mthombowamanzi/Waterserve provides water-finding services free of charge in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal. Together with the Geoff Richert [Water consultant and trainer] and Square Fox cc. [Environmental and Community Services], there is an opportunity for C.I.T.D. to involve refugees in water-finding and water quality assessment training. Participants will be selected based on past agricultural experience and other factors. The project will address xenophobia by bringing together South Africans and refugees.
