Section 11. History, Mission, Focus & Projects:
Background: Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW), is a Non Governmental Organisation and an Advocacy organ committed to increasing public awareness on issues related to the environment, sanitation, hygiene and sustainable human development.
NEW was formed in 1998, two years after the creation of Ebonyi state .NEW was formed to help address issues of environmental pollution and other unhealthy practices that would arise from sudden transformation of an agrarian state to a cosmopolitan state.
It is a fact that states’ creation tends to aggravate environmental pollution through various ‘developmental’ activities. Industrial / domestic wastes disposal, air pollution, population drift leading to urban squalor, displacement of natural ecosystem and bio-diversity and uneven provision of social services, leading to decay of quality life especially to the urban poor, women and children are factors that constitute danger to human health. NEW is to campaign against those factors that drive/promote environmental stress such as poverty, corruption and illiteracy.
Membership of this NGO is drawn from various professional and occupational affiliations. Since its formation, NEW has promoted environmental, sanitation and healthy living through its advocacy programs, Television and Radio education, jingles, newsletters, seminars and stickers and had through these programs been able to renew, refocus and reduce risk factors in human environment.
