About [Edit]
Terre des Hommes Switzerland works to create a better future for children and takes action to protect their basic rights
To enable them, their families and communities, to become self-sufficient to permit them to receive adequate health, care and a relevant good quality education and vocational training
Terre des Hommes Switzerland campaigns for a more equitable relationship between the countries of the North and the South.
Terre des Hommes Switzerland is a non-profit organisation, with no political or religious affiliations, and which pursues two objectives
Improvement of living conditions of under-privileged populations in the South. with special emphasis on women and children, through various development or emergency relief programmes carried out with local partners.
Raising public awareness (especially of young people) of the causes of disparities between North and South.
Terre des Hommes Switzerland has two sections, one based in Geneva, the other in Basle. In French-speaking Switzerland the section works with both salaried personnel and volunteers, but places a high importance on the volunteer aspect of its work.
Terre des Homme was founded in 1960 by Edmond Kaiser in Lausanne. At first its aim was to bring sick children to Switzerland who could not be treated in their own country (Algeria, Tunisia, Vietnam, etc). In 1966 a group was formed in Geneva. This was followed by other countries, giving birth to Terre des Hommes Switzerland. Soon after, the movement spread to other countries and the International Federation of Terre des Hommes was formed.
In 1972, following a divergence of opinion with the Founder, the movement Terre des Hommes underwent an upheaval. The Lausanne association became a Foundation, whereas Terre des Hommes Suisse was reorganised into two sections – Geneva and Basle.
In spite of their differences, the two associations complement each other and a limited cooperation strengthens the action of raising public awareness in Switzerland of the abuses of children’s rights.
Terre des Hommes Switzerland supports nearly 70 development projects managed by local partners in 11 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
These projects fall into three fields of action:
Further Children's Rights and denounce serious violations
Encourage access to appropriate and quality education
Strengthen sustainable development in rural and urban areas
In the field, priority is given to community development. This is so that local populations can improve their organisational skills, enabling them to better claim their rights and reinforce the civil society. These measures encouraging solidarity within groups and communities represent the best way of ensuring the long term financial and technical independence of the projects.
