About [Edit]
SEARCH Homeless Services serves thousands of men,
women and children throughout the city of Houston
and Harris County by providing the resources and
services needed to get off the streets, into jobs and safe, stable
housing. SEARCH meets clients where they
are and helps them figure out what they want and need – everything from basic
essentials like food, clothing, and healthcare, to child care, education and
employment services. There’s nothing
like real hope and good opportunities to help people transform their lives.
- SEARCH Homeless Services is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless men, women and children get off the streets, into jobs and safe, stable housing.
- The SEARCH name stands for Service of the Emergency Aid Resource Center for the Homeless.
- The mission at SEARCH Homeless Services is: Providing hope, creating opportunity, and transforming lives.
- SEARCH Homeless Services, in cooperation with community partners, provides comprehensive services and solutions, including: 1) Mobile Outreach to the disengaged and isolated; 2) a Resource Center that serves as a day shelter with meals, showers, mail and telephone services, laundry facilities, as well as a medical and dental clinic, counseling services, and on-site and community-based housing; 3) an Adult Learning Center; 4) Employment Services; and 5) House of Tiny Treasures, the first accredited and licensed child care center in Houston for homeless children.
- SEARCH Homeless Services partners with other organizations to connect its clients with needed services from the Veterans Administration, Harris County Hospital District, Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority (MHMRA), overnight shelters and others.
- In response to a growing homeless population in Houston, SEARCH Homeless Services was established in 1989 by an interfaith coalition, called the Council of Congregations, which continues to provide oversight and guidance.
- SEARCH’s service area includes the city of Houston, America’s fourth largest city, and Harris County.
- On any given day, there are an estimated 10,000 homeless men, women and children in Houston, but shelter for only half this number. SEARCH Homeless Services seeks to help these clients transition towards stability and independence.
- The majority of Houston’s homeless population is comprised of U.S. veterans; the mentally ill and chemically dependent; and women and children, who comprise the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.
- Less
than one percent of SEARCH’s total operating budget is funded by the city
of Houston and Harris County. Contributors to SEARCH include: federal
programs, charitable foundations, private citizens, the United Way, Houston
congregations, and corporations.
- During the past two decades, SEARCH Homeless Services has become a respected leader in providing quality services for the homeless, based on the client’s readiness and ability to develop the self-confidence and self-sufficiency skills required to lead an independent adult life.
- SEARCH Homeless Services teaches both intangible life skills and tangible work skills to build self-worth in the community and in the workforce.
