About  [Edit]

The Alaska Marine Conservation Council [AMCC] is a community-based organization of people who care about the health and future of Alaska`s oceans and coastal communities. Our members are fishermen, subsistence harvesters, marine scientists, small business owners and families. Our way of life, livelihoods and economies depend on healthy marine ecosystems.

We are working to protect and restore our marine environment through sustainable fishing practices, habitat protection, and local stewardship. We support an ecosystem approach to research and marine resource management that incorporates the best science, experiential knowledge and the wisdom of tradition.

AMCC is working to shape fisheries management to:

* Minimize bycatch

* Protect habitat

* Prevent overfishing

* Promote clean, community based fishing opportunities

In pursuit of these goals, the Alaska Marine Conservation Council:

* Brings an Alaska-based conservation voice to state and federal policy-makers

* Supports community-based conservation initiatives and works with coastal residents, fishing groups and other organizations to design conservation solutions

* Hosts community gatherings to share information and foster discussion about pending fisheries management decisions

* Shares cutting-edge scientific information about the health of our oceans with fishermen and other coastal residents
