Our mandate and mission:
A permanent mandate founded in international law, a worldwide mission to help victims of conflicts and internal violence, whoever they are. The ICRC’s mandate in the Geneva Conventions and in its Statutes; articles on the mission, status and objectives of the ICRC.
The regional delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for central Africa has been based in Yaoundé since 1992. It undertakes a range of humanitarian activities in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The ICRC, as guardian of the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949 and their Additional Protocols, cooperates with the authorities in those four countries in accordance with its mandate and in concert with other humanitarian organizations.
The ICRC’s mission in the Central African Republic was opened in Bangui in 1997. The ICRC’s work in that country includes “water and habitat†activities, promoting international humanitarian law, visiting places of detention, cooperating with the Central African Red Cross Society and forwarding Red Cross messages for refugees and other displaced persons.
