About  [Edit]

The Food Research and Action Center [FRAC] is a leading national organization working to improve public policies to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States. Founded in 1970 as a public interest law firm, FRAC is a nonprofit and nonpartisan research and public policy center that serves as the hub of an anti-hunger network of thousands of individuals and agencies across the country.

FRAC seeks to harness our nation`s resources on behalf of those in our country who are least able to provide for themselves. Hunger reduces a child`s ability to learn, decreases a worker`s productive energy, weakens an elderly person`s resistance to disease. Hunger prevents our nation from reaching its full productive potential.

FRAC engages in a variety of activities at the national, state and local levels to form a comprehensive strategy for reducing hunger in this country. To accomplish these goals, FRAC`s activities include:

Research

FRAC conducts ground-breaking research to document the extent of hunger and its impact on low-income families with children.

Watchdog

FRAC reviews and analyzes the major developments at the national level that affect food assistance programs — legislation, regulations and major reports and proposals. FRAC also monitors the implementation of these laws and serves as a watchdog of regulations and policies affecting the poor.

Program Support

FRAC provides coordination and support to a nationwide anti-hunger network of advocates, food banks, program administrators and participants, policy makers and others. FRAC works closely with groups across the country to expand programs which help children grow and learn, particularly the School Breakfast Program, the Summer Food Service Program for Children, the WIC Program, and programs which provide meals and snacks to children in daycare and before and after school programs.

Clearinghouse

FRAC serves as a clearinghouse for national and local organizations seeking information and analyses about hunger and anti-hunger programs. FRAC`s ties to other national organizations, unions and associations — including educators, nutritionists, physicians, the business community and others — broaden the reach of hunger advocacy.

Public Information

FRAC develops media and public information campaigns to help promote changes in public attitudes and policies, and acts as an authoritative source of information on hunger for the news media and public officials.
