About  [Edit]

Squirrel Rescue Foundation is the only specialized care-centre in The Netherlands for sick, wounded and (too) young squirrels.

Since September 1994, the red squirrel falls under the protection of the Dutch Nature Conservation Law. This indicates that things aren't going very well for the red squirrel in this country. By taking care of red squirrels in need of help, and afterwards reintroducing them into their natural habitat, Squirrel Rescue Foundation contributes to the conservation of the red squirrel in The Netherlands.

Every squirrel that is taken in gets the necessary medical care and attention. Cured animals are reintroduced to their natural habitat. If necessary, they go through a period of adjustment in a controlled environment (both indoors and outdoors) the Stichting has for just this purpose. All animals are eventually released back to their full freedom.

A period of adjustment may be necessary to assure that the animals will be able to maintain themselves in the wild. They must be shy to people and capable of finding their own food.

Squirrel Rescue Foundation works solely with volunteers and receives no financial aid from the government.

Squirrels are brought in by animal protection organisations, animal ambulances, (governmental)organisations and private persons from all over the country. When reported to us, we also pick them up ourselves from anywhere in the country. The faster reports reach us, the bigger a chance the -vulnerable- squirrel stands to survive disease or injury.
