About CAPE

CAPE is concerned about Ecosystem Health, Human Health and Sustainable Development.

CAPE`s Objectives

1. To educate physicians on environmental issues, providing them with both accurate information and a framework for thinking about environmental problems

2. To prepare spokespersons to comment on the health implications of environmental issues in an accurate and rigorous manner

3. To serve as a "think tank" for considering the health implications of environmental issues

4. To provide a forum in which physicians can meet and discuss health issues associated with environmental problems together with non-physician colleagues who have the knowledge and insight they need

5. To advocate certain positions or courses of action

Mission

# to better understand how environmental degradation affects human health

# to educate our members, other physicians, other health professionals, the public and policy makers about the issues

# to be a resource on how environmental degradation affects human health

# to take actions that will contribute to the protection and promotion of human health by addressing issues of environmental degradation

# to work with other organizations, nationally and internationally, that share our concerns and values.

CAPE Priorities

CAPE priorities are organized into the following program areas. These are the areas where our energy is focused.

* Children`s Health

In the past, the regulation of environmental pollutants, when it has been based on human health concerns, has been carried out with the health of adults in mind. There was often no recognition that children are more exposed, and more vulnerable, to environmental pollutants. CAPE believes this is a critical issue and has been involved in education and activism in this area.

Our Children`s Environmental Health Project has been designed to be an online resource for health professionals and the public about children`s health and the environment.

* Toxics

Toxics encompasses several groups of environmental pollutants that have important human health effects. These are: pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, GMOs, metals, endocrine disruptors and consumer products.

* Climate Change

The warming of the earth`s environment due to human activity is apparent to all, and the human health effects of global warming are starting to be noticed. CAPE has identified this as one of our priorities for several years now.

* Greening Health Care

In North America, the health care system is one of the biggest sources of environmental pollution. As health care providers, we have a particular responsibility to avoid harming human health, and should work to make our hospitals more environmentally sustainable.

* Regulatory Reform

CAPE advocates for laws, standards and policies that will promote health through the protection of the environment and the prevention of environmental degradation. The organization works to strengthen regulation in Canada at federal, provincial and municipal levels, believing that a strong regulatory framework is necessary for ensuring a healthy environment.
