About Growing Our Community
What is Growing Our Community?
Growing Our Community is a private, volunteer organization that supports and encourages socially responsible development practices in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
We believe in sustainable community growth and building practices that move towards new, environmentally-aware and socially responsible developments [and developers]. Whether this means different types of zoning, better utilization of eco-friendly technologies, or real enforcement of existing bylaws, we believe there is a difference to be made - and we are willing to make it.
To be clear, WE ARE NOT ANTI-DEVELOPMENT. We do not, however, believe that the growth of our city should proceed without consideration of the effect current developments will have on future residents of Maple Ridge.
Who is Growing Our Community?
The driving force behind Growing Our Community is Ken Hemminger, a local resident who noticed relatively rapid changes in the `behaviour` of a creek that runs through his backyard when a development was started upstream.
These changes encouraged Ken to investigate the development, the planning process, and the role played by the developer and City Hall in the process. He is now actively documenting the `progress` of the development and sharing his findings with readers of this site and interested groups.
What does Growing Our Community do?
The main goal of Growing Our Community is to increase the occurence of socially responsible development practice. This means that our primary interest is to prevent the offloading of quantifiable costs [environmental and social] from private individuals, businesses, and corporations onto society at large.
In some cases, Growing Our Community would encourage a developer to use a technique with lower environmental impact than what is planned. In other cases, we would ensure that builders adhere to municipal bylaws and the terms of the development permits.
Additionally, we work actively with other local organizations who have a vested interest in keeping the growth of Maple Ridge at sustainable levels.
