About  [Edit]

Pacific Salmon Foundation

Founded in 1987, Pacific Salmon Foundation is an independent, politically neutral organization dedicated to rebuilding healthy sustainable and naturally divers Pacific salmon stocks. We believe that action is more important than words; that collaboration and partnerships are more effective than finger pointing and blame.

Over the past two decades we have accomplished a great deal, restoring many spawning streams, helping recover salmon populations throughout the province, and inspiring people to act. By supporting more than 560 community and educational programs, we haven encouraged tens of thousands of volunteers to become active in salmon conservation. Our strategic partnerships extend through community organization, business and industry, commercial and recreational fisheries, all levels of government, and First Nations groups.

Vision

Specifically, the vision:

To achieve healthy, sustainable and naturally diverse Pacific salmon stocks.

And the mission statement:

To conserve and rebuild Pacific salmon populations through strategic and focused efforts where people and resources are mobilized to work together to achieve common goals.

When it was announced that the Pacific Salmon Foundation would be the project manager for the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund, the Foundation Board undertook a comprehensive review of it`s organizational structure, and vision and mission to ensure compatability between the two organizations.

Bringing them back, stream by stream is more than just a statement for PSF, it`s our purpose for being...

PSF has a proven track record as the leading non-governmental, Canadian organization with a long-term commitment to salmon restoration. Founded in 1987, PSF is a federally incorporated, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the conservation and healthy growth of Pacific Salmon stocks.

PSF:

• Promotes the conservation, restoration and enhancement of Pacific Salmonids for the benefit of present and future generations and

• Provides a funding mechanism for projects promoting the conservation, restoration and enhancement of Pacific Salmonids.

With our purpose well-stated – “bringing them back stream by stream to ensure a healthy future for our salmon resource” – we fund community-based salmon projects and coordinate recovery plans as Program Manager for the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society.

Historically, the PSF’s focus has been on funding community-based salmon restoration projects run primarily by volunteers. Recent PSF initiatives have adopted a more proactive stance by setting priorities for salmon recovery in specific regions or watersheds and then undertaking the planning and fundraising to complete the work. Under its newest initiative, PSF coordinates recovery plans as Program Manager for the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society.

We raise funds in the public and private sectors and grant these funds to support projects that will help achieve our mandate efficiently and cost-effectively. We generate sponsorship, cash and in-kind donations, awaken desire among the public to get involved, and try to create advocates for Pacific salmon. We strive to inform and educate anyone who will listen because we can show them how easily they can get involved and help.

PSF does not target the causes of decline of salmon abundance but emphasizes the potential for everyone to be part of the solution, and provides the means for all to help. Because we are an independent and non-political group, we are regarded and trusted as an impartial but concerned intermediary. Our focus is action.
