About [Edit]
According to the last national social survey, 91% of the Malians are excisées. This practice touches all the country, except certain areas of North. There are several types of genital mutilations: excision, drilling of the clitoris, seam the large ones and/or small lips, infibulation, burn of the clitoris…Previously, these mutilations were practised on the girls before the marriage, but today, they are especially the babies who are victims. This practice touches all the religions and it is regarded as a cultural phenomenon.
Thus, as Mrs. Kadidia Sidibe entrusts it, to attack the MGF means to attack with cultures, traditions and thus populations, generally in rural medium, which live in these habits. At the time of the information campaigns, prudence and pedagogy are thus of setting.
In addition, there is from now on a law prohibiting the MGF in certain countries bordering like Niger and Senegal, which causes an exodus of exciseuses towards Mali and worsens the situation.
In 2003, the AMSOPT was active in 75 villages in the areas of Bamako, Kayes and Koulikoro. Since the network extended, even if it remains still much of zones to cover, which represents besides one of the principal challenges of association. Association seeks to develop information of proximity: it organizes seminars and forms person-relays villagers. Organizers offer sessions of information on the operation of the human, the genital apparatuses masculine and female body. The goal of these “classes” is to convince the villagers of the uselessness and the dangers of the MGF. The AMSOPT thus has person-relay (two women and two men) in each village where it intervenes.
In addition, the AMSOPT counts the exciseuses ones and deals with the complications due to the excisions. Association pays the hospital expenses and the family the expenditure related on transport and food.
Lastly, Association seeks to make pressure on the political level for the adoption of a law condemning the MGF (cf Plaidoyer with the French National Assembly for the adoption of a preliminary draft of law prohibiting the practice of the excision), and to support the debate. It publishes for example articles written starting from radio transmissions, supplemented by the comments of the members of association and various intellectuals.
