About  [Edit]

GE-Free Tasmania is a community group representing both producers and consumers. Our objectives are to:

*Prohibit all field trials and the general release of genetically modified organisms ("GMOs") in Tasmania.

*Ensure that the Tasmanian government retains the power to prohibit the release of GMOs in Tasmania.

*Ensure that there is compulsory labelling of all food and pharmaceutical products that contain genetically engineered ("GE") ingredients.

GE-Free Tasmania is not opposed to the contained (i.e. under laboratory conditions and not exposed to the open environment) production of GE pharmaceuticals provided that:

*The processes are rigidly controlled to ensure public safety; and

*GE products and all derivative GE products are adequately labelled.

Some of the risks associated with the release of GMOs into the open environment are outlined below. However, many of the potential irreversible consequences associated with the release of GMOs are entirely unpredictable

1) Public Health Risks

2) Environmental Risks

3) Economic Risks
