About  [Edit]

IslandWood is one of the nation's most innovative educational facilities, offering programs for everyone - children, graduate students, teachers, families, and adults.

IslandWood is a unique 255-acre outdoor learning center designed to provide exceptional learning experiences and inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. We offer programs for schools as well as programs for adults, children and families; volunteer opportunities; a host of speaker's series and other community events open to the public.

Mission: To provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship.

Vision: We envision a future in which all people view themselves as lifelong learners, and share an extraordinary bond of stewardship for the environment, for their communities and for each other.

Our Guiding Principles: At IslandWood - learning comes alive for children and adults through:

Delivering experiential "hands-on" education

Using the environment as a classroom

Engaging diverse learning styles

Integrating science, technology and the arts

Showcasing sustainable practices

IslandWood’s primary focus is discovery-based learning and outdoor field experiences for children that appeal to different learning styles and interests. Our programs integrate scientific inquiry, technology, and the arts, helping both children and adults develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between biological and cultural diversity.

Operating from sustainably designed facilities on a 255-acre campus, the organization serves as a model for energy conservation and community living. It is our hope that our approach to education and community stewardship will encourage life-long learning and help children and adults understand how their actions make a difference in the world.
