Through our work, we try to enable poor people with disabilities to gain control over their lives. We believe that people with disabilities have equal rights as citizens and should have access to opportunities in every aspect of life like everybody else. This kind of intervention is usually called rehabilitation; obviously, ‘specialists’ like special teachers, special therapists and other experts do this. This approach reflects the perception that people with disabilities need specialised help to adapt to the existing norms and demands of society; the specialists play a key role in implementing it. In the last few years there have been some changes in this scenario and different approaches have been evolved.
