The Women's Association of Romania was set up as a consequence of the December 1989 revolution.
Objectives: Its aims are to make women aware of their responsabilities as participants in economic, cultural and social activities.
Activities: The Association is involved in a number of educational programs such as: (1) W.A.R. Program for an Equal Democracy; (2) Support for Small and Middle Business and (3) Lonely Persons Club.

The Women's Association in Romania (AFR) purpose is to group all women in Romania together, regardless of their residence, age, nationality, religion, political conviction, profession, putting forward the awareness-raising of women when it comes to:
- Their responsibilities when participating in the economic, socio-political and cultural activities, as mothers and wives;
- Specific problems influenced by the society;
- Specific rights which women can benefit from.
AFR is a leader within the women’s movement and it is fighting for a real status for the women in our country.
A.F.R. is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation with the objective to increase the level of awareness among women in Romania, which can lead to their determination in achieving and developing their ability to take responsibility over positive changes in their own life and the society.
AFR has 9557 members actives and beneficiaries in Bucharest and 20 branch organisations in different counties of the country. The pragmatic approach gives the association a large audience within women. The activities of AFR are based on voluntary work.
Devoted to the slogan “HELP ME TO HELP YOU”, AFR, leader of the women’s movement, is promoting an efficiencies partnership in enrolling programs, projects and common activities. AFR has become an important link between organisations, committees and associations working in the domain of women in Romania. AFR is a founded member of the The Coalition for Reproductive Rights in Romania, (27 NGO s) (1998), and is the initiator of the Coalition for Culture of Peace and Non-violence in Romania (22 NGOs) (1999) and of the National Network of the Organisations of/for Women in Romania (2002) and supporting member of the Coalition of the Association for Business Women (2004).
