About [Edit]
The Association of Independent Cuban Journalists (APIC) was created in February 1989. APIC has protested the lack of freedom of the press and expression in Cuba and has criticized official writers and the media as nothing more than "carbon copies" of the party organ, Granma. APIC sees itself as a place where words can be used to defend "just causes" and cites its program as "defending trampled rights wherever that may occur." One of APIC's leaders, Hubert Jerez, is currently in prison; another, Yndamiro Restano Diaz, was arrested on April 3, 1989, suspected of planning to attend a demonstration at the time of Gorbachev's visit to Cuba.
