About [Edit]
The mission of BACH is to educate and build support in the Bay Area and other urban areas for the preservation of a biologically viable redwood forest. BACH connects local environmentalists with forest activists to preserve the old growth redwood ecosystem, with real solutions for forest workers and communities.
As the rapid destruction of the redwood forest in Humboldt County accelerated after the Maxxam takeover of Pacific Lumber in 1985, it became apparent that greater outreach was needed for forest defense. In 1993, the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters [BACH] was formed to educate, activate, and mobilize people in the San Francisco Bay Area. BACH was establish as a volunteer-driven grassroots project under the sponsorship of the Ecology Center in Berkeley.
BACH works in collaboration with grassroots activists and organizations in Northern California who use diverse tactics and strategies to advocate ecologically sound solutions for the forest ecosystems of California`s northcoast.
In Order to fulfill our purpose of public education, advocacy and action,
BACH:
maintains a 24-hour hotline [510]835-6303
holds monthly meetings the 2nd Tuesday of every month and the Rockridge Library, 5366 College Ave., Oakland, near Rockridge BART [refer to hotline for more info]
produces e-mail and phone tree action alerts [sign-up instructions on our home page], educational slideshow presentations, fact sheets, newsletters and other informational pieces
coordinates informational "tabling" outreach, generating letters and postcards to decision makers on forest and watershed issues
organizes public events and workshops
maintains a bulletin board, informational files, and video loan library on issues related to redwood forest preservation
mobilizes the public for local and regional rallies as well as for participation in agency process
distributes publications of Northcoast activist groups as well as forest-related merchandise
produces articles for magazines and newspapers
carries out media outreach
BACH`s current work is focused on organizing participation in the Headwaters Preserve planning process to help shape the management of the Preserve and monitoring other impacts on the ancient forests and endangered species of California`s northcoast, and mobilizing action in response to those threats.
