About [Edit]
EDS is a New Zealand based environmental advocacy organisation. It is a New Zealand Incorporated Society operating primarily as a network of professional people who are prepared to assist the Society undertake its work on a voluntary basis, together with a community of people who support the Society financially through their membership.
The Society identifies the issues it wishes to pursue. These need to be of at least national scope in their impact, or in their potential to set either precedents or policy.
Our main areas for action are:
Landscape Protection
Biodiversity
Climate Change
The Society pursues its aims through proactive policy development, advocacy and through involvement in selected planning cases. It sees itself as a `process guardian` - ensuring that environmental decisions are made properly.
Its area of action is primarily New Zealand but it is prepared to act in South Pacific nations on like matters, with local partners.
In the planning area we look for opportunities to take and support cases which have the potential to establish precedents in sustainable environmental management. Establishing environmental case law is a route we are prepared to use, where that is the most effective route. However we will usually seek favourable outcomes to planning cases prior to them going to court. EDS much prefers to get involved in cases at the hearing stage rather than at appeal.
EDS Objectives
To preserve, conserve, protect and enhance natural and cultural resources and the environment and to defend them against harm, misuse, depletion, unsustainable use and destruction.
To conduct research into all aspects of resource management and any related subject
To promote the development of legal, scientific and resource management skills
To provide advice and representation in resource management matters in the public interest
To undertake litigation in furtherance of the objects of the Society
To publish newsletters, journals, articles, pamphlets, internet web pages and any other materials which will further the aims of the Society
To arrange seminars, conferences, meetings and other gatherings which will further the aims of the Society
To liaise and co-operate with like organisations in New Zealand and elsewhere when that will further the aims of the Society
