About  [Edit]

Established in 2007, Oiyakaha is a center for artists, biologists, ecologists and volunteers. Oiyakaha is located in the Amazon of Brazil, 125km north of Manaus and covers 140 hectares of virgin rainforest with rivers and hills, springs and valleys.

Oiyakaha is derived from the language of the indigenous Waimiri-Atoari, meaning “shining brightly, the sun is rising.”  In accordance with its name, Oiyakaha’s intention is to radiate positive energy, stimulate artistic activities and contribute to the development of solutions for the humanitarian and ecological needs of the Amazon.

Oiyakaha’s foremost objective is to protect the existing flora and fauna as well as to replant 3 hectares of deforested areas on its land. Furthermore Oiyakaha’s intention is to promote and develop ecologically sound and healthy living.

Oiyakaha has the following objectives:

Gather, provide and publish information on:

  • fructiferous, edible or medicinal plants of the region
  • principles of healthy living and nourishment
  • permaculture
  • greywater systems and human manure solutions

Raise awareness in environmental issues and disseminate ecologically sustainable living and farming  practices

  • develop a model for agriculture in the Amazon without the need of use of pesticides or fertilizers
  • promote health consciousness, balanced nutrition and locally-grown food
  • offer residencies for artists, musicians, biologists, ecologists and volunteers
  • organize lectures and workshops in art and music involving the local community
  • foster a local cultural network
