About [Edit]
Mission
Washington`s transportation system needs to be reformed. Too many residents cannot choose to leave the car at home because there are few or no other options.
Transportation Choices Coalition seeks to bring Washingtonians more and better transportation choices -- real opportunities to take a bus, take a train, ride a bike, or walk -- as well as drive alone.
The decisions we make about how to expand our transportation system to meet Washington`s growing needs in the next one, five, ten years will have enormous impacts. They will impact our health, environment, economy and quality of life in Washington. As a coalition of citizen groups, businesses, public agencies and concerned individuals, we`re playing a role in these important decisions.
Our Work
* Advocacy
Transportation choices need a strong advocate both statewide and locally. One of our primary activities is to advocate for legislation and policies that promote choices.
Our advocacy work is guided by a belief that it is more effective to propose a better solution than simply point out flaws in a proposal. Sometimes this means developing and sponsoring our own proposal, other times we put our weight behind good solutions brought forth by others.
In general we support state and local level transportation funding prioritized on cost effectiveness, and environmental and social benefit. This means advocating for measures that include efforts to reduce the number of car trips and expand transportation choices—and widen roads only as a last priority.
* Education
Our staff and board are a wealth of knowledge on transportation policy and innovative solutions. The importance of sharing this knowledge, as well as spreading the word about our organization and mission and how citizens can help, make education a key part of our work.
Education efforts include sponsoring and co-sponsoring educational and candidate forums, as well as participating as panel members in educational and debate forums. We provide information tables at local events like street fairs to reach out to and educate the public. Staff members also make presentations to interested groups and individuals around the state.
Through these efforts hundreds of people have learned about issues such as: the value of transportation choices; how transportation decisions are made and how the process can be improved; advantages and disadvantages of current proposals on the table; connections between land use and transportation and how better land use can strengthen communities; environmental and global warming impacts of automobile dependency.
Additional educational efforts include co-sponsoring Meet Your Legislator meetings between decision makers and citizens outside of the legislative session, providing training on writing letters to the editor and comments to officials, and background preparation for citizens interested in testifying at hearings. Finally, our newsletter, website and email “Action Alerts” all aim to education our members and supporters on current transportation issues.
* Policies
Triple Win. Transportation Choices Coalition`s Triple Win Principles are: fund efficiencies first, expand transportation choices, and strategic road construction. Following from impartial, good faith analysis, Transportation Choices will often recommend particular mixes of transportation improvements for a given transportation project or corridor that best meet these basic goals.
