About [Edit]
Friends of the Chicago River’s mission is to foster the vitality of the Chicago River for the human, plant and animal communities within its watershed.
Priorities are to provide public access to the Chicago River and to show that the Chicago River can be both ecologically healthy and a catalyst for community revitalization.
Friends envisions a continuous Chicago River Trail, linking the more than 50 urban neighborhoods and suburban communities along the River’s 156 miles.
The diverse programs of Friends reflect the complex, multifaceted challenges of restoring the health of an urban river. Friends mobilizes volunteers, brings together coalitions, initiates planning solutions, connects people to the River through public outreach programs, and supports an innovative education program.
Friends actively pursues on-the-ground projects that have a real impact on the Chicago River and, at the same time, reconnect people to the Chicago River and to their communities.
Friends’ innovative strategies result in long-term improvements to the Chicago River and have been used as models for urban river improvements nationwide.
