About [Edit]
The mission of the American Civil Liberties Union is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees. As the local office of the ACLU and the NYCLU, the NY State Affiliate, the Central New York Chapter has fought for civil liberties in Upstate NY since 1963.
The American system of government is founded on two counterbalancing principles:
- First, that the majority of the people governs, through democratically elected representatives
- Second, that the power even of a democratic majority must be limited to ensure individual rights
Our work involves public education, advocacy, and litigation on issues of free speech and right to assemble, religious freedom as well as separation of church and state, the rights of people accused of crime, as well as issues of due process, discrimination, and equal protection.
