About  [Edit]

Founded in 1988, Death Penalty Focus is a non-profit organization dedicated to the abolition of capital punishment through grassroots organizing, research, and the dissemination of information about the death penalty and its alternatives.

With over 10,000 members nationwide, Death Penalty Focus is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of renowned political, religious, and civic leaders, along with legal scholars and attorneys involved in death penalty litigation. In addition, DPF has an Advisory Board comprised of community and religious leaders, celebrities, writers, and representatives of labor and human rights organizations who support our work. We conduct research on behalf of lawyers, educators, and the general public, and sponsor a variety of public education and media campaigns. DPF also serves as a support network for our ten chapters throughout California and as a liaison among anti-death penalty groups nationwide.

We believe that the death penalty is an ineffective and brutally simplistic response to the serious and complex problem of violent crime. By diverting attention and financial resources away from preventative measures that would actually increase personal safety, the death penalty causes more violence in society. We are convinced that when the public is informed about the inherent racism, injustice, and the true human and financial cost associated with the death penalty, the United States will join the growing community of nations throughout the world who have already abolished capital punishment.

Activites

- We publish and distribute a newsletter, The Sentry, which provides comprehensive information and editorials on the death penalty on a local, national and international scale.

- We widely distribute our materials on the death penalty, such as "Myths and Facts About the Death Penalty", The Catalyst News Bulletin, Facts Sheets on Youth and the Death Penalty, the Federal Death Penalty, the Death Penalty in California, and "10 Reasons to Oppose the Death Penalty".

- Our staff, Board members, and chapter members participate in numerous speaking engagements before community groups, schools, church groups, legal and other professional organizations.

- We provide support, direction, and materials for the activities of DPF chapters throughout the state. These chapters are comprised of volunteers who are organizing against the death penalty at the county level.

- We mobilize abolitionists for rallies, demonstrations, vigils, and other public campaigns.

- We sponsor public opinion polls. In 1990 we co-sponsored a poll conducted by Field Research Institute. The poll revealed that when given a choice, a substantial majority [67%] of Californians prefer the penalty of life in prison without opportunity for parole and restitution to the victim`s family over executions.

- We hold conferences complete with workshops on topics such as child abuse, racism, and how the media covers the death penalty.

- We appeal to the public through newspaper advertisements and letters to the editor.

- We offer a research and referral service for death penalty statistics, cases, facts, and issues.

- We have an Annual Awards Dinner to honor individuals and organizations working towards the abolition of the death penalty. The dinner is the main annual fundraiser for Death Penalty Focus.
