About [Edit]
Our Mission
To maintain the health of the Kanaka Creek watershed`s natural ecosystem through education, community involvement, scientific research, land preservation and partnerships based on stewardship principles.
About Us
The Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society [KEEPS] was formally incorporated as a Society in December of 1998. Since then, we have been involved with a diverse variety of watershed stewardship activities including mapping, restoration and monitoring, which you can view in the various galleries on this site. KEEPS is headquartered at the Bell-Irving Hatchery on Kanaka Creek in east Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada.
Today, the organization consists of a Board of Directors and General Membership, and a part-time Coordinator via a funding contribution from the Greater Vancouver Regional District. We also obtain funds in order to retain two Program Interpreters for our school programs, and the District of Maple Ridge has been an important partner in this regard.
We strongly believe that the most effective habitat protection is achieved by proactively educating the public at large. This philosophy started our school programs, and also led to our ongoing involvement with international student visits to Kanaka. In 2004, we launched the Catching Kanaka Spirit program, where a team of youth 13 to 18 years of age participated in watershed activities during several summer weekends. We are also very active at a number of public events, such as the spring Kanaka Creek - Yours to Keep event.
