Community Harvest was founded in February, 1997 on the belief that ALL people should have access to good, healthy food, regardless of one’s neighborhood or income level.
Our Mission
Community Harvest’s mission is to create a locally rooted, sustainable food system that meets the needs of both underserved communities and small farmers in the DC region.
COMMUNITY is what we seek to enhance, nourish, and support - creating programs which increase healthy living and economic opportunity around good food. We:
Harvest crops from Urban Oasis to sell at a nearby farmers market.
Assist in the development of community-run farmers` markets and farm stands.
Renew bonds between farmers and consumers through community supported agriculture [CSA].
Voice concern for “urban eaters” and “rural feeders” through radio interviews and written articles.
Educate children and adults about connections between sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and the environment.
Support youth leadership.
Team up with youth, farmers, neighbors, etc. to create a “Good Food For All” coalition dedicated to improving the current food system.
