About  [Edit]

Vision

The vision of Indigenous Rights Watch is for the nations of the world to adhere to internationally accepted human rights standards for Indigenous Peoples. We want to start with our own--the United States. As such, our mission is the following.

Mission

To bring an end to human and civil rights violations against American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians within the United States borders. To achieve this mandate, Indigenous Rights Watch uses human rights monitoring, social marketing, educational media communications and action to:

- report the nature and extent of indigenous rights violations;

- raise legal, political and public awareness about such violations; and

- advocate for United States` adherence to and ratification of international standards protecting Indigenous Peoples` rights.

Program Areas

In accordance with Indigenous Rights Watch's mission statement, some of the developing program areas include:

Indigenous Rights Monitor (IRM). The purpose of the IRM is to Document and disseminate information on the scope of indigenous rights violations in the United States. This program includes the development of an annual forum where Indigenous representatives, policy makers and other interested parties can come together and discuss solutions. See background paper Indigenous Rights Monitoring in the US.

Raise Awareness Program. Raising political, legal and social awareness about indigenous rights violations through effective social marketing and educational media techniques. See events section for a full list of events and activities.
