About [Edit]
Previously named the National Wildflower Research Center, the organization was renamed to honor its most important founder. The mission of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is to educate people about the environmental necessity, economic value, and natural beauty of native plants.
The Wildflower Center is a botanical garden in Austin, Texas, dedicated to native plants. Our vision for the future is to preserve and restore the natural beauty and biological richness of North America by inspiring people to love the land. We want people to think differently about the plants around them. We want people to understand the role of native plants in a healthy ecosystem, to value the beauty and health of the natural landscape that defines their heritage, and to take action to protect, conserve, and restore the natural landscapes of North America. We invite you to dig deeper into our website and explore our perfectly wild world, both online and onsite. On these pages, we share information about our gardens, our programs, and more, as well as the plants that endow our mission.
Our philosophy is rooted in the following principles espoused by our founders, former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson and acclaimed actress Helen Hayes. These principles govern our national agenda as well as the development of our local site in Austin.
We honor and respect the natural beauty and biological heritage of each region of the country
We commit ourselves to conserving and restoring wildflowers, native plants, and the biological communities on which they depend
We encourage native flora through artful, naturalistic plantings in public, private, urban, and suburban landscapes
We use native plantings with regionally appropriate architecture to integrate the human community into the natural world in a responsible and respectful manner
We recognize that the health and well-being of human communities is directly related to the health of the land which sustains human life
