Transatlantisches Graduiertenkolleg
Das CMS ist ein interdisziplinäres, international orientiertes Forschungszentrum. Es entstand aus der 30jährigen Tradition des Instituts für Stadtgeschichte und bildet seit 2004 den institutionellen Rahmen des Transatlantischen Graduiertenkollegs Berlin - New York. Es ermöglicht einen regen Austausch von etablierten Wissenschaftlern aller Berliner Hochschulen mit hochrangigen Vertretern der Stadtforschung in den USA und exzellenten jungen Nachwuchswissenschaftlern aus aller Welt. Das Kolleg wird von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) gefördert.

Schwerpunkte
Das CMS verbindet im Bereich der Metropolenforschung universitäre Grundlagenforschung mit anwendungsorientierter Forschung und Beratung, treibt internationale Nachwuchsförderung voran und regt eine verstärkte Kooperation und Kommunikation von Akteuren aus Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft an. Wissenschaftler und Fachleute unterschiedlicher Disziplinen - Historiker wie Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaftler, Städteplaner wie Architekten, Ethnologen wie Politiker und Experten aus Politik und Unternehmerschaft – werden eingeladen, um gemeinsam die Alltagsprobleme der Metropolen zu erforschen und konkrete Lösungsansätze zu erarbeiten.

Transatlantic postgraduate programme
The CMS is an interdisciplinary, internationally-oriented research centre. It evolved as a result of the 30-year-old tradition of the Institute for Urban History, and since 2004 has constituted the institutional framework for the Berlin-New York Transatlantic Postgraduate Programme. It makes possible a lively exchange between established academics from all of Berlin's universities, high-ranking representatives of urban research in the USA and outstanding up-and-coming young academics from all over the world. The programme is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Areas of focus
In the area of metropolitan studies, the CMS combines basic university research with application-oriented research and consulting, promotes the next generation of academics on an international level and pursues increased cooperation and communication between players in the areas of science, economics, politics and civil society. Academics and experts from different disciplines – historians and social and cultural scientists, urban planners and architects, ethnologists and politicians and experts from the worlds of politics and business – are invited to jointly research the everyday problems faced by metropolises and to devise concrete solutions.
