About [Edit]
Background: The idea to create AFJB was first discussed in 1986, but it was not formed until 1989 when the political climate became more conducive to the creation of an autonomous organization.
Objectives: AFJB`s objectives are to: promote the principles of law among women, both rural and urban; defend human rights, particularly those of women and children; and fight for women`s access to professional activities.
Activities: AFJB organizes conferences, assists women prisoners, helps abandoned children, and participates in the democratic process at various levels. It published a book on women`s rights in two local languages and produces radio programs in French and national languages on such issues as marriage, inheritance and rape. In 1992, AFJB began a legal clinic in Cotonou for both men and women, and provides legal aid or counselling to approximately 350 people a year.
