About  [Edit]

The Golden Way is a project implemented in partnership by Environmental Association 'Floarea de Colt' and The 'Alburnus Maior' Association with the financial support of the Environmental Partnership Foundation .

The purpose of the project represents the building of an appropriate environment for developing alternative activities to mining industry in Rosia Montana, integrating Rosia Montana in the Greenway network.

The main objectives of the project are the followings:

  1. Identifying the customs and traditions related with mining in Rosia Montana and of other aspects that shape the local identity
  2. Promoting these as values of the area trough the Golden Way,
  3. Involving the locals from Rosia Montana in activities that can bring alternative income and empowering them to develop private initiatives.

The local authoroties showed little intrest in supporting and empowering eco-tourism and other rural activities that could be rooted in the community. Therefore this project is aimed at addressing the lack of a sustainable developement policy in the region. The intrest in identifing mining alternatives began in 1997, when Gabriel Resources Ltd. announced its intention to start Europe`s larges open-pit gold mine. By this date Gabriel Resources proved incapable of optaining the necessary permitis, limiting its activity to portraying Rosia Montana as an impovrished mono-industrial community.

A jouney in the region will reveal that Rosia Montana is in fact a rich area full of archaeological vestiges, customs and traditions which contributed to the strong local identity.
