About  [Edit]

GAP International is a network of organizations founded in 1990 and working for a common goal:

empowering people to live and work
    increasingly sustainably

Each member organization (2008: in 20 countries - and the number is growing) is an independent entity with full responsibility for designing and delivering appropriate programs, and for its own funding and financial management.

GAP International

  • supports exchange of experience, including organizing workshops and other events
  • analyses, synthesizes, and acts as a repository for the growing body of knowledge concerning individual and group empowerment
  • offers new member organizations a 2 or 3-year program of training and support for design and/or cultural adaptation of empowerment programs for SD

GAP's programs have been found by researchers in several countries to be uniquely successful at producing long-term, sustained behaviour change. The numbers of people engaged in these programs is in the millions.

Current GAP programs are designed for adults (households), schools and youth, and workplaces. They cover the whole spectrum of 'Education for Sustainable Development' and are acknowledged by UNESCO as contributing to the Decade for ESD.

GAP International has consultative status with UN ECOSOC, Habitat, and UNEP; and cooperates with UNESCO.
