About  [Edit]

Background: AHRJP was established in October 1991 as a non-partisan organization to work for fundamental human rights from an African judicial perspective, using constitutional remedies and the African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights.

Objectives: AHRJP's objective is to be a body for coordination, action and research; to uphold and encourage support for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; to provide information to promote the observance of human rights throughout Africa; to promote the development of national consciousness about human rights and civil liberties and to build a strong inter-African link between such national movements; to promote, assist and ensure the proper administration of justice; to bring about law reform; to militate against the denial of human rights in Africa and support all actions necessary to secure redress for infringements of these rights; and to monitor and assist minority groups in the field of human rights.

Activities: AHRJPN offers legal assistance in civil and criminal cases; works for the reform or expansion of the law; organizes educational activities; issues public statements; and lends its support to individuals and organizations working to defend their rights throughout the continent. The organization hopes to establish regional offices throughout the continent and to establish an African Human Rights and Justice Institute at the new University of Namibia.
