About  [Edit]

Seattle Tilth Mission Statement:

Seattle Tilth inspires and educates people to garden organically, conserve natural resources, and support local food systems in order to cultivate a healthy urban environment and community.

Seattle Tilth is a vibrant, nationally recognized non-profit organization that promotes the art of organic gardening in an urban setting. Our beautiful gardens at the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle`s Wallingford district are an inspiring model of organic gardening practices. The gardens are always open, and you are welcome to visit at any time.

The Seattle Tilth Association began in 1978 when neighbors sharing a vision for an urban agriculture and living environment joined together to remove a bleak expanse of asphalt and to breathe life into the soil beneath.

This act of real estate development has had far reaching effects, from a local increase in diversity of beautiful insects and birds to a heightened consciousness city-wide of the benefits of composting. In working to enhance local environments and community through education about organic gardening, Tilth members have created diverse and innovative programs that have improved the city.

Our vision is to introduce people to the immensely satisfying joys of gardening. We are working to make life-enhancing organic gardening methods the norm instead of an alternative to industrialized, chemical-intensive techniques. We seek to expand opportunities for living well while using earth`s resources more lightly and to create opportunities for diverse people to work together in practical ways that nuture community.
