Background: The centre was founded in 1996 and is closely affiliated with the University of Antwerp.
Objectives: The Centre for the Study of the Great Lakes Region of Africa is a research centre dedicated to gathering and processing information about countries in this part of Africa with the aim of accurately assessing and monitoring the stage of conflict in the area. The Centre favours a multidisciplinary approach, integrating economics, political science and law in its analyses. It acts as an adviser to NGOs and the Belgian government.
