About  [Edit]

The Association of Volunteer Centres of Quebec

On October 23rd, 1968, Ann Crowther, director of the Montreal Volunteer Service, invited the Centres located in Quebec - at this time, Montreal, Granby and Saint-Hyacinthe - to a meeting in an attempt to create an association. It was only in 1971, at the invitation of the Centre de bénévolat de la Mauricie (today the Centre d'action bénévole Laviolette - Trois-Rivières), that thirteen Centres of the province decided to form a committee to study the advantages of such an association. On January 17, 1972, Ann Crowther of Montreal, Solange Lamothe of Trois-Rivières and Rachel Payment of Granby signed the request for incorporation and in mid-April of the same year, the Minister of Financial Institutions granted a provincial charter to the group which became the Association of Volunteer Centres of Quebec.

This association had repercussions across Canada. Centres in Ontario, the West and the Atlantic Provinces came together in a project which, during the Vancouver Conference in June 1974, led to the creation of the Canadian Volunteer Committee, which would eventually become Canada Volunteers.

Among the activities coordinated by the Association of Volunteer Centres of Quebec, the Week of the Volunteer, organized as such for the first time in 1974, is an important one. This week is recognized throughout North America, and it contributes significantly to making the public at large more aware of the work performed by volunteers as well as officially recognizing their contribution.

Renamed in 1984 as the Fédération des centres d'action bénévole du Québec, the mission of the FCABQ comprises four points : collaboration among the centres, representation, support of members and promotion of volunteer work in Quebec. As the year 2001 has been proclaimed International Year of Volunteers, the FCABQ coordinates activities taking place in Quebec, with the collaboration of 25 organizations from different sectors of activity.

The Fédération des centres d'action bénévole du Québec represents the volunteer sector on the Advisory Committee on Autonomous Community Action at the Secrétariat à l'action communautaire autonome du Québec (SACA). This board oversees numerous programs and various training activities aimed at supporting the work of organizations and volunteers. A great deal of its efforts is devoted to informing the public and encouraging young people to become volunteers. It also participates in national and international conventions. Moreover, the steps it has taken to obtain official recognition by the government of the acts of mutual aid and solidarity accomplished by Quebecers, contributed to the creation of the Hommage bénévolat-Québec Award.
